familiar yet almost forgotten

“We must work every day, whether we feel like it or not, otherwise when it comes time to get out of the way and listen to the work, we will not be able to heed it.”
-Madeleine L'Engle

Today, I listen to the waves,
feel the persistent breeze
nudge at my skirt and
the ends of my hair,
feel the numbness of my toes...

It is an experience of returning
as a new person, with the
same delights. The familiar
yet almost forgotten
communion of our
separate thoughts comforts
me as we walk side by side
toward the unknown haze.

The chill bites at my fingers.
I run out of ink in one pen
and ask for another. I continue.
Lord, what is my work for today?

new things & old things

today, I began my workout regimen for the month of May, I finished settling in to the house, and I learned what the inside of garlic looks like. then a nostalgia-filled evening, full of people I haven't seen in years, not since the last time we had all been in a production together over 5 years ago. such a reminder of God's provision and faithfulness, of how much He can work through a community of believers.

27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my right is disregarded by my God”?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
-Isaiah 40:27-31

Come unto Him, and He will care, He'll comfort you, in your despair; when you are weary, He'll give you rest... come unto Him.

mayflies & sunsets

finally home... wonderful evening of conversation, tea, purple cow chips ice cream, film photography, sunsets, and (of course) hundreds of mayflies. I haven't developed my film yet, evidently, so I don't have any photographic proof of today's loveliness. but I think this does justice to its beauty. happy summer!

peace peace peace

Peace is the center of the Atom, the core
Of quiet within the storm. It is not
A cessation, a nothingness; more
The lightning in reverse is what
Reveals the light. It is the law that binds
The atom’s structure, ordering the dance
Of proton and electron, and that finds
Within the midst of flame and wind, the glance
In the still eye of the vast hurricane.
Peace is not placidity; peace is
The power to endure the megatron of pain

With joy, the silent thunder of release,
The ordering of Love. Peace is the atom’s
start,

The primal image: God within the heart.
-"Sonnet, Trinity 18" (Madeleine L'Engle)

Lord, I am so thankful that you grant us such peace, even at the hardest and busiest of times.
